Lunch in the Studio by Manet
An 1868 oil on canvas painting, Lunch in the Studio, by Edouard Manet (1832-83), the French modernist painter. The central figure is very likely Léon-Edouard, probably Manet's son (but never officially recognised). As is typical of Manet's works, the relationship between the three figures in the scene is left unclear. Another typical Manet feature is that the figures seem to crowd towards the viewer who remains an idle spectator since none of the three is looking at anything in particular. Critics were baffled by this painting, but it was selected for the 1869 Salon in Paris. (Neue Pinakothek, Munich)
