The Yellow House by van Gogh
An 1888 oil on canvas painting, The Yellow House, by Vincent van Gogh (1853-90), the Dutch post-impressionist artist. Painted in September, van Gogh rented rooms here – the part with the green shutters. Van Gogh's home holds the centre of the painting, not only because of its position but by the different texture of the sky above and the road below, while the house remains smooth. The artist shared these rooms briefly with Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) at the end of 1888. Van Gogh decorated the interior with his own paintings such as the Sunflowers series. Van Gogh called this work The Street. The building no longer exists. (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam)
