Prisoners' Round by van Gogh
An 1890 oil on canvas painting, Prisoners' Round (aka Prisoners Exercising), by Vincent van Gogh (1853-90), the Dutch post-impressionist artist. Painted in February in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in southern France. Painted during the artist's illness and consequent confinement, it was worked from a print by Gustave Doré (1832-83). Copying prints and photographs was something van Gogh frequently turned to, and he often compiled scrapbooks of works by other artists. (Pushkin Museum, Moscow)
