Sorrowing Old Man (At Eternity's Gate) by van Gogh
An 1890 oil on canvas painting, Sorrowing Old Man (aka At Eternity's Gate), by Vincent van Gogh (1853-90), the Dutch post-impressionist artist. Painted in April-May in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence but based on a sketch the artist had done years before in The Hague (1882). He describes that sketch in a letter to his brother Theo as "an old sick peasant sitting on a chair by the hearth with his head in his hands and his elbows on his knees" (LT 150D). It is perhaps significant that the artist returned to this subject following his illness and voluntary admittance to the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy.
