Wheatfields with Crows by van Gogh
An 1890 oil on canvas painting, Wheatfields with Crows, by Vincent van Gogh (1853-90), the Dutch post-impressionist artist. Painted in July in Auvers-sur-Oise, northern France. The view of the fields here is slightly raised which makes the crows stand out against the two contrasting but complementary colours of the wheat and sky. Two more contrasting colours are used for the paths: red and green. The central path seems to lead nowhere. Not the artist's final work despite popular myth. In a letter to his brother Theo, the artist explains his motivations for the painting:
I have painted three more large canvases. They are vast stretches of wheat under troubled skies, and I didn't have to put myself out very much in order to try and express sadness and extreme loneliness...I'm fairly sure these canvases will tell you what I cannot say in words, that is, how healthy and invigorating I find the countryside.
