Jockeys before the Race by Degas
A c. 1878-9 oils, gouache, and pastels on card painting, Jockeys before the Race, by Edgar Degas (1834-1917), the French impressionist painter. Degas was particularly interested in capturing horses, usually in the tense moments before a race or just after. The influence of Japanese prints can be seen in the way Degas has cut the scene, and the quirky detail of having a pole partially hide the horse in the foreground is typical of Degas' work on this theme.
