Woman in a Green Dress by Monet
An 1866 oil on canvas, Woman in a Green Dress (aka Camille in a Green Dress), by Claude Monet (1840-1926), the French impressionist painter. This work was accepted by the Paris Salon and was well received by the critics for mixing the traditional darker tones of portraiture with the modernity of the woman's clothing. The model is the artist's wife-to-be Camille-Léonie Doncieux (1847-1879). The large size of the canvas and the unusual view from behind ignored the conventions of portraiture.
