Houses of Parliament, Sunset by Monet
A 1900-04 oil on canvas, Houses of Parliament, Sunset, by Claude Monet (1840-1926), the French impressionist painter. Monet painted a whole series of views of London's Houses of Parliament in order to capture a wide variety of atmospheric and light conditions. The bold brushstrokes give the impression that it was painted quickly, but, in fact, the artist laboriously built up the image, even transporting the canvas back and forth between France and England to continue working on the picture. This example has the most striking contrast of colours, most of the others in the series use a palette of delicate pastel colours of yellow, pink, and lilac. (Kunsthaus Zürich, Switzerland)
