L'Hermitage at Pontoise by Pissarro — View Full-Size Image

A c. 1868 oil on canvas painting, *L'Hermitage at Pontoise* (aka *Hills of the Hermitage*), by Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), the Danish-French impressionist painter. The artist lived in Pontoise for two spells and painted many village and rural scenes in the area. L'Hermitage is the name of the hamlet in this painting. Here he creates an interlocking composition using verticals and horizontals, all brought together using strong tonal contrasts. The figures on the road are an interesting meeting between a bourgeoise woman and her child and a farmworker. (Guggenheim Museum, New York)
