In this gallery, we showcase 30 paintings by Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), the French post-impressionist artist who made such an impact on modern art from the late 19th century. The selection here is presented in chronological sequence to show the artist's progression in style from his early landscapes to those works influenced by Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) and Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) and into the artist's truly original period in Martinique, Brittany, Tahiti, and the Marquesas Islands. Gauguin's use of bold colours, strongly-defined borders, and mystical imagery were just some of the ways he influenced modern art and those who followed like Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Pablo Picasso (1881-1973).
I feel I am right about art. In any case I will have done my duty; and there will always remain the memory of an artist who has set painting free.
