In the Café by Gauguin
An 1888 oil on jute painting, In the Café (aka Night Café at Arles), by Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) the French post-impressionist painter. Created while living in Arles, southern France, with Vincent van Gogh (1853-90), who painted a very similar portrait. Gauguin described the subject of the painting in a letter: "I've done the café which van Gogh likes very much and I like rather less. Basically, it isn't my thing, and the coarse local colour doesn't suit me." (Hodge, 160). It was painted on jute as this was cheaper than canvas. (Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow)
