Self-portrait by Paul Gauguin
An 1888 oil on canvas self-portrait by Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) the French post-impressionist painter. Painted in Arles in southern France. The portrait on the wall behind Gauguin is of the artist Émile Bernard, and the text below reads "Les Miserables", a reference to Victor Hugo's novel, the main character of which is an outcast and failed artist.
