The Pont Neuf by Renoir
An 1872 oil on canvas, The Pont Neuf, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) the French impressionist painter. The artist here caught the rich variety of people who crossed one of the city's major bridges. In order to capture specific types, Renoir had his brother Edmond stop passers-by and ask them directions so that they could be sketched. (National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.)
