In the Dining Room by Morisot
An 1886 oil on canvas painting, In the Dining Room, by Berthe Morisot (1841-95), the French impressionist painter. The subject is Pasie, the artist's maid and nanny of her daughter. Morisot often captured informal scenes, as here, where the smiling maid seems interrupted in a task. The dog gives another element of everyday domesticity in a light-filled room where objects are given variations of precision in form. This work was shown in the 1886 Impressionists Exhibition in Paris. (National Gallery of Art, Washington DC)
