In this gallery, we showcase 30 works by Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), the American impressionist painter. The selection here is presented in chronological sequence to show the artist's career progression. Cassatt was most interested in capturing the activities of the women of her class, both at leisure and with their children. This selection includes her most famous works, her relatives, and several lesser-known canvases and prints.
The art historian M. Howard gives the following summary of the mature Cassatt style:
Her work reveals a strong decorative sensibility, combined with a particular fondness for unusual perspectives, asymmetrical compositions, clean coloration, sharp incisive drawing, and a shrewd and sympathetic characterization of her subjects.
