Two Women in a Loge by Cassatt
An 1882 oil on canvas, Two Women in a Loge, by Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), the American impressionist painter. The two young girls here at the opera are connected by the large painted fan, a fashionable addition to a lady's attire in this period and one which used to attract an admirer's eye. The work is also a nod to Cassatt's fellow impressionists who often eked out a living selling painted fans when their canvases could not find buyers. Cassatt has a mirror behind the girls which reflects the back of the figure on the right and the balconies of the theatre.
