Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was a composer, abbess, and Christian mystic who was proficient in countless academic areas such as philosophy, herbology, medieval literature, and cosmology. Hildegard had reported visions that she could interpret as messages from God and when these visions were deemed authentic by church authorities, Hildegard began to record these visions and would eventually use them to compose works like Scivias, an illustrated work of her religious experiences. Hildegard would also go on to compose literary works in regards to human health. Given her engagement with the theological world and her literary works, Hildegard was regarded as a prominent visionary figure in Medieval Europe.
