Coronation of Melisende of Jerusalem
Melisende of Jerusalem (1105-1161) was a strong queen who played a great role in Jerusalem in the 12th century. Melisende was made heir by her father Baldwin II of Jerusalem (r. 1118-1131), and despite seeing Melisende as a competent ruler, he still felt that she would need a husband to help with the ruling of Jerusalem so Melisende married Fulk of Anjou (died 1143). Melisende’s reign was filled with turmoil and political challenges, even from her own son Baldwin III (r. 1143-1163). Melisende rose above these challenges and made a great impact by participating in military campaigns and helping build the cultural and religious practices of Jerusalem.
