Blanche of Castile from the Moralized Bible
Blanche of Castile (1188-1252) was a medieval French Queen who played a crucial role in ensuring the stability of France in the turbulent climate of the 13th century. Blanche became Queen consort of France through her marriage to Louis VIII of France (r. 1223-1226), and would become regent of France twice. Her regency (1226 to 1234 and 1248 to 1252) truly highlighted Blanche’s intelligence and understanding of the political world as these periods were filled with conflict such as managing rebellious nobles and military campaigns. Not only is Blanche remembered for her success during her regency but also for her patronage of the arts and education, and her lasting impact on France.
