Eleanor of England, Countess of Leicester
Eleanor of England, Countess of Leicester (1215–1275) or Eleanor of Leicester played a significant role in the political upheavals of England. She was married at nine years old to William Marshal, 2nd Earl of Pembroke (1190-1231). When her husband would die after seven years of marriage, Eleanor swore an oath of chastity. Eventually Eleanor married Simon de Montfort (1208-1265) in 1238. Eleanor was a great aid to her husband in his political endeavors, and played a large role in his journey to gain the English throne. In 1265 Simon was defeated when trying to gain the English throne and Eleanor fled to exile in France where she spent the rest of her life as a nun at Montargis Abbey.
