St. Eleonora
Eleanor of Provence (c. 1223-1291) was a medieval queen who was an active figure in the English court. She married King Henry III of England (r. 1216-1272) in 1236, and became Queen consort of England. In this role, she had to face the turbulent period that was 13th-century England. Eleanor’s marriage was filled with both personal and political turmoil including conflicts with English barons. Eleanor rose above the criticism that she faced and continued to influence her husband and remained an active participant of the arts by supporting musicians and poets in the English court. After rebel barons seized the government in 1264, Eleanor went to France but returned to England after the barons were defeated in 1265. After the death of her husband, Eleanor retired to a nunnery at Amesbury.
