Brunhilda of Austrasia
Brunhilda of Austrasia (c. 543-613), a Visogothic princess, became queen consort of Austrasia through her marriage with King Sigebert I of Austrasia (r. 561-575). Well known for her political acuity, Brunhilda would play a significant role in the proxy wars in the Frankish world; these wars were related to Brunhilda’s feud with Queen Fredegund in Neustria (died 597), who arranged the death of Brunhilda’s sister. By harnessing her power to outwit Fredegund, Brunhilda was advocating for her family’s interest and honor.
