Margaret of Anjou
Margaret of Anjou (1430-1482) was a prominent figure during the Wars of the Roses. She was married to Henry VI of England (r. 1422-1461 & 1470-1471), and played an important role in politics at the time. With the ongoing political turmoil, Margaret was determined to save her son’s succession to the throne so she became involved with political maneuvering against the Yorksists. In 1461 Margaret was exiled to France after the Yorkists won at the Battle of Towton, but she returned to England in 1471. Upon her return, she and her son were captured and her son was killed. Margaret remained a captive until 1475 when she was able to return to France where she spent the rest of her life.
