Lady Margaret Beaufort, National Portrait Gallery
Margaret Beaufort (1443-1509) was the mother of Henry VII of England (r. 1485-1509), the first Tudor monarch. With the Yorkists gaining the throne during the War of the Roses in 1471, Margaret struggled with many political upheavals during the transition, but she was focused on securing her son the throne. With her political maneuvering and influence, she was able to secure the throne for Henry VII, and he became King of England. Margaret was devoted to religious and charitable activities, as well as education. One of her largest contributions was establishing Christ’s College Cambridge, and her will gave much of her estate to St. John’s College.
