Byzantine Empress Zoe
Empress Zoe (c. 978-1050) or Zoe Porphyrogenita was the empress of the Byzantine Empire from 1028 to 1050. After two marriages, Zoe jointly ruled with her sister Theodora (died 1056) in 1042. Zoe eventually was married a third time to Constantine IX Monomachus (r. 1042-1055), and he ruled alongside the two sisters. During her marriages and her co-rule, Zoe was an active ruler and, with Theodora, the two set out to implement reforms throughout the empire to combat corruption. During her reign, Zoe was able to successfully navigate the complex political climate of the Byzantine Empire.
