A map illustrating the transformation of the East India Company from a hopeful merchant venture in 1600 with isolated trade outposts governed by isolated and mostly independent town councils into a major ruler of large territories in India from 1765 - a process that gained momentum as Robert Clive (also known as *Clive of India*) managed to outmaneuver the colonial ambitions of the French (as they too attempted to solidify their influence on the Subcontinent by taking advantage of discord among local rulers,) and in 1757 came out victorious against the Nawab of Bengal at the Battle of Plassey and established Company Rule and taxation in Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa.
