A map illustrating the Byzantine Empire (the Greek-speaking eastern half of the Roman Empire with Constantinople as its capital) from the ascension of Justinian I in 527, through the reign of Basil II until the sacking of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade in 1204 at the request of Venice, and establishment of the Latin Empire. The map also depicts the Empire as a military buffer and cultural bridge between the various feudal kingdoms of Medieval Europe and successive Muslim empires and dynasties of Asia.
