The Nunnery Quadrangle at Uxmal by Catherwood
This lithograph from Frederick Catherwood's Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan depicts the so-called `Nunnery Quadrangle' at the city of Uxmal. The exterior and interior of the quadrangle are intricately and elaborately decorated with carvings and reliefs exhibiting great skill. The building is also known as `La Casa de las Monjas'(the house of the nuns)a name the Spanish gave to it. The original Maya name of the building, and its purpose, is not known.
