A c. 1745 oil-on-canvas portrait by Allan Ramsay of Charles Edward Stuart (1720-88), also known as 'Bonnie' Prince Charlie or the Young Pretender since he sought and failed to restore the Stuart line to the throne of Britain in the Jacobite rebellion of 1745. Eager to appear as regal as possible, the 'Pretender' is shown in sumptuous clothing and with a self-assured air. As was customary in this period, the subject wears his decorations, here the star of the Order of the Garter.
