The First World War in Europe, May 1917
A map illustrating the situation in Europe around May 1917, during the First World War (World War I or The Great War), as the conflict had already raged on for nearly three years. The United States had recently entered the war, beginning to shift the balance of power.
Although the war's epicenter was the Western Front, the February Revolution in Russia led to Tsar Nicholas II's abdication and instability on the Eastern Front. In the South, British forces were making strategic advances and reshaping the political landscape in the Levant. Meanwhile, the Balkans remained a powder keg of tensions and territorial ambitions.
