The architects of the ancient Greek world believed that temples should not just fulfil their purpose of housing a statue of a god or goddess but that they should be admired from both close-up and from afar. Consequently, a great deal of effort was made to build temples in prominent positions so that these functional structures also became an important and symbolic element of the civic landscape. In this gallery, we showcase 20 of the most famous and not-so-famous Greek temples located across the Mediterranean.
