Odysseus & the Sirens
Roman mosaic depicting Odysseus and the Sirens. From Dougga (Tunisia), 2nd century CE. In Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus' ship sails past the island of the Sirens. The hero is tied to the mast of his ship to resist the allure of the Sirens' song. The creatures are depicted as women with the legs and wings of birds, equipped with a variety of musical instruments.
