Roman Mosaic with Charioteers
3rd Century CE mosaic depicting a charioteer and horse from each of the four chariot racing factions (Red, White, Blue and Green).
Chariot racing was the most popular sport in ancient Rome and the Blues and Greens were the most popular factions. The emperors Vitellius and Caracalla both supported the Blues. But it is the Greens, first mentioned in 35 CE, who enjoyed the greatest popularity. (Palazzo Massimo all Terme, Rome).
