Coin Depicting Vesta
Vesta was the Roman goddess of the hearth and the domestic household. The Vestal Virgins were her priestesses and constantly tended a sacred flame in her temple, which could never be allowed to extinguish. Vesta was usually represented by her flame, but she was also depicted as a draped and veiled woman. Pictured: The reverse of a copper coin made c. 37-38 CE. Rome. (British Museum)
