Painting of Mercury, House of the Vettii
Mercury was the god of travellers, fortune, and commerce. He was the messenger of the gods and guided the souls of the dead to the underworld. He was also a trickster god, associated with unsavory characters like thieves and vagabonds. Mercury’s symbol was the caduceus, and he was often depicted with a winged helmet or winged sandals. Pictured: Mosaic from House of the Vettii, Pompeii. 62-79 CE.
