Statue of Persephone, Naples
Persephone, known to the Romans as Proserpina, was the goddess of the underworld and of vegetation. In the most prominent myth surrounding Persephone, Pluto kidnaps her to be his wife, causing the grief of her mother Ceres. Persephone was often associated with flowers and pomegranates in art.
