Fresco with Wounded Aeneas
In an alternate Roman foundation myth, the Trojan prince Aeneas founded Rome after fleeing the conclusion of the Trojan War. Aeneas was the son of Venus and the mortal prince Anchises. He was considered to be a direct ancestor of many noble Roman families. Pictured: Fresco depicting an arrowhead being removed from Aeneas' thigh. 1st century CE (between 45 and 79 CE), from Pompeii.
