Eros Stringing His Bow
Cupid (the Roman equivalent of Eros) was the god of love and desire. He was the son of Venus and Mars but was later conflated with the Egyptian god Horus (son of Isis and Serapis). In Roman mythology, Cupid possessed magical arrows which could cause mortals and gods to fall in love, or to be repulsed by each another. He was typically depicted as a winged youth or young boy carrying a bow. Pictured: 2nd-century CE copy of a 4th-century BCE sculpture of Cupid.
