Cult Relief of the Mithraic Mysteries
Mithras was an Indo-Iranian god of light, covenants and oaths. The cult of Mithras flourished in the Roman Empire from the 1st century CE onwards. The worship of Mithras was highly secretive, and little is known about the mythology of Mithras. Initiates had to pass a series of tests in order to climb the ranks of the Mithraic cult and gain access to its secrets. An important part of Mithraic iconography was the bull-slaying scene or tauroctony. Pictured: 2nd- or 3rd-century CE Mithraic tauroctony. (Römisch-Germanisches Museum)
