Pompeii Fresco with Lares
The Lares were the sons of Mercury and acted as household deities who guarded homes and roadways. They were often represented by little statuettes placed in the area they protected. Lares were typically depicted as a pair of graceful male youths, one holding a wine-horn and the other a libation bowl. Pictured: Pompeian fresco of Lares. (Naples Archaeological Museum)
