Hephaestus/Vulcan at the Birth of Erichthonius
Vulcan was the god of fire, volcanoes, blacksmiths, and craftsmen. He represented the destructive power of fire, as well as its potential use as a tool of creation. Vulcan is often depicted as lame or misshapen, unlike most other gods who were usually considered beautiful. He usually carries a hammer or other tools. Pictured: Bas-relief of Vulcan. Made c. 50 BCE - 50 CE. Ostia, Italy. (Pio-Clementino Museum)
