Vase painting (on a white-ground wine pitcher) depicting a young woman spinning wool from distaff, twisting a thread between the fingers of her right hand (ceramic oinochoe, 21.6 cm, detail; found in Locri, created in Attica; ca. 490-470 BCE; BM reg. no. 1873,0820.304). The the (viewer’s) right an inscription reads: ΗΕΠΑΙΣΚΑΛΕ (ή παΐς καλή, “the beautiful girl”). Image courtesy of the Trustees of the British Museum, London.
