The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the first of its kind, created in 280 BCE. The lighthouse used a mirror to reflect the light up to 35 miles out to sea. By day, it used the light of the sun, by night it used a massive fire. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

This gif is a modern reconstruction of what the lighthouse would look like if it stood today.
