Wood-handled steel axe with gold decoration, engraved with the insignia of a Mamluk emir who held the honour of being cupbearer to the sultan. Used by a member of an axe-bearing corps, possibly similar to the Varangian Guard which protected the Byzantine Emperors. Height of 72.3 cm (28 1/2) x blade width of 23.5 cm (9 1/4 in). Weight: 1341 g (2 lb. 15 oz). Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
