The 1903 Peter the Great Egg by Peter Carl Fabergé (1846-1920). The egg was given by Tsar Nicholas II (r. 1894-1917) to his wife Alexandra Feodorovna. The egg commemorates the bicentenary of the founding of St. Petersburg by Peter the Great, ruler of Russia from 1682 to 1725. The egg is made of gold with chased scrolls and palm leaves and set with rose diamonds. The exterior has two enamel paintings by Zuiev, these show the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg and a residence of Peter the Great, Inside the egg is a miniature model of the equestrian statue of Peter the Great in St. Petersburg. The egg measures 15 cm (5.9 in) in height.
