Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (c. 475-525 CE) is depicted on the far left. An allegory of Philosophy presents to him the allegories of the Seven Liberal Arts dressed in 15th century clothing, each holding a symbol of their subject; from left to right: Boethius, Philosophy, Grammar, Rhetoric, Logic, Music, Geometry, Arithmetic and Astronomy.

Boethius' The Consolation of Philosophy was very influential in the scholarship of the European Middle Ages. He wrote that in the style of a dialogue between himself and Philosophy, embodied by a woman. Later. Medieval Universities taught the Seven Liberal Arts as enumerated here.
