Hermod Before Hela, illustration of the god Hermod kneeling before Hel, Norse goddess of the dead in the realm of Hel by English artist and illustrator John Charles Dollman, published in Myths of the Norsemen from the Eddas and Sagas by Guerber, H. A., Harrap, London, 1909.

In this scene, Hermod asks for the return of the soul of the god Baldr to life. Hel consented on the condition that everything in the Nine Realms of Norse cosmology should weep for Baldr. When the giantess Throk refused, Baldr had to remain in the afterlife.
