Enoch, lithograph by William Blake, published in London, 1803-1807.

The British Museum, London.

The lithograph portrays the biblical character Enoch, son of Jared, father of Methuselah, and an ancestor of Noah. Enoch was a key figure in the Old Testament who was said to live 365 years before he was taken by God to heaven. There he was initiated into mysteries and secrets of angels and archangels. Some sources associate him with Metatron, the angel. For that reason, Enoch was a key figure in the Rabbinic kabbalah of Jewish mysticism as he was said to have an access to divine knowledge.
