Battle During the Retreat of Germanicus (Kampf beim Rückzug des Germanicus), oil on canvas painting by Ferdinand Leeke, 1898.

Berlin State Museums, Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. Photo by Andres Kilger.

The painting presents the key moment of the Germanicus’ campaign in Germania. The battle involved four Roman legions, Legio I Germanica, Legio V Alaudae, Legio XX Valeria Victrix, and Legio XXI Rapax led by Caecina against the German tribes commanded by Arminius. Despite Caecina's victory the battle was near-fatal and cost the Roman army many men.
