An 1860 oil on canvas painting, Portrait of Monsieur & Madame Auguste Manet, by Edouard Manet (1832-83), the French modernist painter. The artist's parents are here painted in a conservative style and, consequently, it was accepted by the Salon of Paris in 1861. The work shows the influence of Spanish art on Manet with its dark tones and realism. (Musée d'Orsay, Paris)
